Weaving is one of the oldest and most widely used methods of making fabrics. Simply put, weaving is the interlacement of two sets of threads, the warp threads run vertically through the length of the fabric and weft threads run horizontally across the width of the cloth. Inspiration for a woven fabric can come from many sources- from nature, architecture, paintings, antique textiles and so on. These inspirations are translated into woven designs through the use of yarns, texture, stripes, checks and most importantly colour (Holyoke, 2013; Shenton 2014). Weaving by hand also permits the careful weaving of luxury yarns like alpaca, silk, lambswool and cotton. Our master artisans have inherited this technique from their ancestors through generations of weavers and they work close to nature in family communities at the Peruvian highlands.
